| University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) stands on the northeast end of the Shanghai city proper, neighboring the Fuxing Island . With red bricks and green trees featuring the campus, USST boasts its historical buildings with the largest scale among all Shanghai universities and colleges. In 1999, Shanghai Research Institute of Optical Instruments merged into USST, and in 2003, Shanghai Medical Instrumentation College and Shanghai Publishing and Printing College were readjusted under the administration of USST. |
Deeply rooted in the fertile soil of China's civilization and influenced by the quintessence of Occidental cultures, the two university sections as a whole have brought up 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as a large number of elite including Lei Jieqiong, Xie Xide, Xu Zhimo, Li Daoyu, Xu Kuangdi, Meng Jianzhu, Huang Qifan and Lu Fuyuan etc.

USST comprises sixteen colleges, two departments, twenty-eight research institutes, with 13,158 undergraduates and 1,788 postgraduates. USST has now established five macro-disciplines (engineering, science, management, economics, and liberal arts) and nineteen specialties, offering fifty Bachelor degree programs, two post-doctoral programs, three first-rate Ph.D conferring disciplines, twenty-eight second-rate Ph.D conferring disciplines, eleven first-rate Master degree disciplines, fifty-eight second-rate Master degree disciplines, and ten Engineering Master and MBA conferring disciplines.
With scientific studies benefiting teachings and social services, the annual research fund allotted is as high as 100 million Yuan, which accelerates the "863" National Projects, "973" National Basic Research Projects and other key projects of National Natural Science Foundation and the municipal government.
As a legacy in its educational tenet, USST opens up itself to both Chinese and Western civilizations, taking an active part in international academic exchanges in the past 20 years. It has established over ten inter-university relations with countries and regions such as Germany , United States , Canada , Japan , Switzerland , Russia , Australia , Ireland and Hong Kong . Meanwhile, USST has established 13 joint international programs with foreign universities including Sloan School of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York Syracuse University, New York City University , Hamburg University for Applied Science, Montreal University , etc.
