Brief Introduction of USST International Exchanges

University of Shanghai for Science and Technology began its international exchange in 1978. At first the Foreign Affair Office was appointed to be in charge of the exchange matters. Since 1996 it has changed its name to International Exchange Office. It is mainly responsible for the management of international university cooperation and academic exchange, employing foreign teachers, university joint cooperation, teaching staff going abroad and so on. The main purpose of USST international exchanges is to serve the university education and scientific research, and promote USST subject construction, academic teaching, scientific research and international exchange of teachers.

Throughout the passing 30 years, the foreign affairs of USST have always got the concern and support from the central and local government. The leading team of USST insists on opening policy, energetically developing the cooperation and exchanges with foreign universities, and hence promoting the total development of the university construction.

It has established inter-university and scientific research relationship with over ten universities such as Germany , America , Canada , Japan , Switzerland , Russia and Hongkong, and mutually sent scholars to give lectures. On the basis of long cooperation, USST actively developed joint international schools, and has established12 joint international schools, 16 joint majors with foreign universities. They are Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( America ), Hamburg University for Applied Sciences ( Germany ), Montreal University ( Canada ), etc. So far the total number of students for master degree or bachelor degree involved in the joint programs is over 1800.The demonstrative business management project in our university, sponsored by the former Machinery Ministry and Sloan School of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has held 7 training classes for advanced managers and advanced management personnel, set the precedent to cooperate with the best university in the world.

In the passing 30 years, USST has employed over 1000 foreign experts; received over 1000 oversea delegation groups including many foreign government minister delegation groups; sent out more than 500 teachers to attend various academic exchange activities abroad. With these international exchanges, USST has not only established good co-operative relationship with foreign government, universities and enterprises, but also successfully communicated with governing department and business to make contribution to our economic construction. From 1993 on, five foreign experts on the campus from Germany, United States and Canada have been separately awarded the National Friendship Award issued by State Department, White Magnolia Memorization Award and White Magnolia Honor Award issued by Shanghai municipal government.

Under the guidance of "a footing in Shanghai , a view of the world" and "to cultivate students, to serve the society", USST has been striving to cultivate qualified and versatile talents with innovative ideas and international visions in the fields of engineering, application, management etc. It will continue to actively explore the internationalized way of running a university with USST specialties.

The new century will witness the advance of USST as a world-known first rank university in China . Look, the resplendent pearl is springing up on the Huangpu River by the East Sea .
