March 15, 2017

On March 15, 2017, a Duo Cantabile concert was held in Music Hall in USST. The concert was formed by pianist Nariaki Sugiura and cellist Simona Barbu. Two young musicians are the professors of UND, which is in partnership with USST to support this program. About 70 students attended this concert.

Nariaki Sugiura is a famous pianist who continually gives recitals and concerto performance in US, Europe and Asia. His performance have been featured at the prestigious concert halls including Carnegie Hall, Manoel Theater and Central Conservatory of Music Concert Hall.

Simona Barbu began her musical studies at age seven and gained public attention as a member of the leading string quartet of the Conservatory of Timisoara in her native Romania. She has been traveled around the world to give performance and are well-received by audiences.

Two artists began their performance by the fantasy pieces of Robert Schumann. It includes three parts. The notes softened the hearts and took away the stress. Cello and piano mixed together and brought the pleasure on both of the vision and the sound. The following music is the 6 Romances of Sergei Rachmaninoff, which is arranged by Simona Barbu. Two artists coordinated together and the audiences were well enjoyed.

Next is the Requiebros of Gaspar Cassado. As a cellist, Cassado wrote this to appreciate his teacher. The sound became lively and cheerful. The hearts of the audiences were lifting know. After a small intermission, the Sonata for cello and piano of Johannes Brahms was played. The pitches sometimes were high and sometimes were low. Nariaki played different range of music and echoed with Simona.

Besides the original plan, the musicians played an extra piece of music mixed with Tango, blues and jazz. It is passionate and lights the atmosphere up.

After this wonderful performance, ACC volunteers present flowers for two musicians as a token of grateful for their arrival and mind-blowing performance. Thanks Nariaki and Simona for your show and ACC volunteers for your help and assistance.
